In the Engineering Arena, students will deal with a project assignment containing real problems in the fields of mechanical engineering, naval architecture, energetics and electrical engineering and their task will be to solve the exercise in the most efficient, realistic and a budget-friendly way.


Underwater habitats maintenance

Scientists often use underwater habitats located at sea beds for animal and marine research. Underwater habitats provide all facilities required for human survival, for weeks or even months. Aquanauts, as they are called occasionally, require supplies and external help with maintenance. We want to explore the concept of underwater habitats, what would be required to run and maintain them.


Project Assignment

The project assignment consists of three related stages. The competition will be organized in three days each of which represents one competition stage. Teams will be given an assignment in the morning, deal with it during the day and present their solutions to supervisors in the afternoon. Team solutions are graded and ranked each day. The best teams will qualify for and compete in the finals in the fourth day of the competition when they will present their solutions to a panel of judges who will announce the winner of the Engineering Arena.

Who might compete in the Arena

Full time students studying in the field of Technical Sciences and the related subfields of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Naval Architecture and Aerospace Engineering (recommended but not limited to) can compete in the Engineering Arena.

Daniel Pavlović was born in 1988. in Zagreb. He graduated from Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb with two degrees, one in applied mathematics and one in mathematics and informatics education. During his studies he worked as an external research associate at Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb and as an assistant professor at both Faculty of Science and Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb. Apart from his scientific career, he has one in music as well. He completed primary and secondary education in music and has since received many awards at various national and international competitions. He is currently working in AVL-AST d.o.o. in zagreb, as a software development engineer and EXCITE Solutions team Scrum master.

Mario Jelović was born in 1967 in Nova Gradiška where he completed secondary education in mathematics. He graduated from Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb in 1992 where he was named the best student of his generation. In 1999, he obtained a Master’s degree with a thesis on “Mathematical model of fuel injection system” at the same institution. After being briefly employed at Croatian Railways, he took the role of junior research associate at Naval Institute Zagreb which he held between 1994 and 1997. In 1997, he joined AVL-AST d.o.o. where he is still employed today. From that moment on, he started focusing his career on simulations of one-dimensional fluid flow. For the past few years his field of interest is heat management for vehicles. Over the course of his career, he has published 18 papers in various scientific and academic journals.

Zoran Lulić, born in 1966, graduated in 1991 from Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture. Since 1992, he works at the Chair of IC Engines and Motor Vehicles at the same institution. He obtained his Master’s degree in 1996 and his PhD in 2000. His field of interest includes alternative fuels (namely biodiesel), internal combustion engine designs, efficiency and emission of IC engines and vehicles and their interaction with the environment, design of motor vehicles and standardisation in engines and vehicles. He is an author or a co-author of more than 15 papers in respected international journals, 40 conference presentations and a supervisor of more than 130 final papers and Master theses as well as 3 doctoral dissertations.

Marijo Volarević is the Chief Digital Officer at Croatia Insurance Company Plc. He obtained a Master’s degree from Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb, where he worked as a Junior Researcher and completed the “Diploma - Study in Management” university program. He established an international business career working in several industries (pharmaceutics, telecommunication, IT, finance) where he was expanding the scope of use of computer technologies in the digital transformation of business.

Antonio Vasiljević

Antonio Vasilijević is a leading researcher at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb from where he obtained a doctoral degree. After fifteen years of work in the industry, he came back to academia where he, as a member of the Laboratory of Underwater Systems and Technologies, does research in marine robotics. He was in charge of a Horizon 2020 project entitled “A fleet of unmanned surface marine vehicles PlaDyPos – PLADYFLEET” and an ONRG (Office of Naval Research Global) project entitled “Dive into the past with the technologies of the future - submerged coastal archaeology exploration”. He is a member of the IEEE Computer Society and has authored more than 30 articles in international journals and compendia. His field of interest includes marine technology and its application underseas, virtual reality, acoustics and guidance systems, control systems and navigation in marine vehicles.


Nenad Ferdelji

Nenad Ferdelji was born June 27, 1982 in Zagreb. He graduated from Lucijan Vranjanin gymnasium in 2000 and started studying at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb the same year. He graduated from there in 2006, receiving a faculty medal for his work. The same year, he started working at the Chair of Technical Thermodynamics of the same institution. He is in charge of the thermodynamics laboratory and his field of interest includes transfer of heat and mass, modelling of non-stationary temperature fields and design of complex thermodynamic systems. He took part in 5 scientific projects and in more than ten projects in collaboration with industry that, aside from expert studies, mainly consisted of design of heat systems. He co-authored the national algorithm for calculation of energy requirements in cooling or heating building spaces with HVAC systems and authored or co-authored 14 scientific papers in Croatia and abroad.

Ante Zaninović MSc, engineer of naval architecture, works at the Polytechnic of Zagreb where he is in charge of certain laboratory exercises and lectures in subjects related to mechanical engineering. He is an external associate at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb as well. He graduated from Naval Academy in Split, and then from Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture in Zagreb as well, obtaining a degree in naval architecture. Throughout his career, he took on various positions at “Brodarski institut” (Institute of Naval Architecture) in Zagreb, where his concerns included conducting various tests, hydrodynamics of vessels and modelling power plants. He published twenty scientific and research articles in the fields of vessel hydrodynamics and naval architecture. About thirty vessels have been constructed according to his blueprints and he took part in numerous projects at FSB and Brodarski institut.
